The most outrageous thing about John Waters' latest film may be its title, judging from most of today's (Friday) reviews. Newspapers in several cities have refused to carry ads for Pecker, even though the title supposedly refers to a boy who pecks at his food. Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times says that "time has softened [Waters] a bit ... so this latest combination of good humor and bad taste seems downright innocent, even sentimental at times." In fact, Turan writes, "the proceedings are surprisingly sweet and cheerful." "Terminally sweet," is the term Dave Kehr in the New York Daily News uses to describe it, saying that only "a few glimmers of the old, outrageous Waters shine through the film's bland amiability." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times contends that "some scenes are so flat we squint a little at the screen, trying to see why anyone thought they might be funny." But Chris Vognar in the Dallas Morning News finds a lot of it funny. "It's goofy, it's gross, but above all Pecker is a sweet-natured look at celebrity and how it affects regular folks," Vognar concludes. "Goofy" is also an adjective that Janet Maslin uses to describe the film in her New York Times review." She also calls the film "trashy fun."
