One True Thing is receiving a wild mixture of opinion from critics. The Los Angeles Times' Kenneth Turan writes that it "demonstrates that the power of simple things, the transcendent nature of the ordinary, can make for riveting filmmaking." On the other hand, Steve Murray in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, while praising Meryl Streep's performance, notes that it "underscores the film's general emotional shallowness. ... The movie needs to go deeper to earn our tears." However, Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun Times insists that the actors overcome the deficiencies of the script. "It is the craftsmanship that elevates One True Thing above the level of a soaper," he writes. Norman Wilner in the Toronto Star praises both script and stars, however. "In its uncompromising, clear-eyed honesty," he says, "this movie is one of the best of the year." |
