After appearing in a string of clunkers, Bill Murray for a change is getting some positive reviews for his performance in Rushmore as a dour tycoon, a part that, according to Susan Wloszczyna in USA Today, "fits Murray like a slept-in custom suit." Critics are also lavishing praise on director Wes Anderson for creating, in the words of New York Daily News critic Dave Kehr, "one of the freshest, richest, most original films to come out of Hollywood in a very long time." (The film is being given a short run in New York and L.A. to qualify it for Oscars.)

Bill Murray is picking up the best reviews of his career for Rushmore, which opens wide today after a short run in New York and Los Angeles last December to qualify for Oscars. Rita Kempley in the Washington Post, who calls the film a "weird, warm, monumentally entertaining comedy," describes Murray, who appears in a supporting role, as "wickedly funny" in his role as a steel tycoon. (Murray is saying in interviews that it was easy for him to play the part since he has become a tycoon himself.) "If Murray has sometimes seemed like an actor who phones in his performances," comments Liam Lacey in the Toronto Globe & Mail, "here he seems like a man who phones in his life." "The actor ... brings amazing nuance and emotional depth, to a finely calibrated comic role," concludes Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Steve Murray in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes that his namesake's "performance is like the movie itself -- captivating, original and unlike anything else you've seen."
