If the judgments of the nation's leading film critics are borne out, Peter and Bobby Farrelly's There's Something About Mary is likely to become the sleeper hit of the year. The film has been greeted with a tongue-in-cheek tirade by the Washington Post's Stephen Hunter, which begins, "The nerve of some people. The makers of There's Something About Mary, for example, believe it is enough for a comedy to be funny. Talk about arrogance!" Janet Maslin in the New York Times asks, "Why bother to list the [film's] myriad offenses ... when it's easier -- definitely much too easy -- to enjoy them?" Susan Wloszczyna in USA Today calls it "a gut-busting blast of tasteless tomfoolery." Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times, calls it "an outrageous goofball farce." Carrie Rickey, in the Philadelphia Inquirer confesses: "I'm not sure whether it was the jokes or the shock of the film's crudeness, but, I swear, I cried until I laughed." Jay Carr in the Boston Globe agrees: "You won't be proud of yourself for laughing at the staunchly lowbrow There's Something About Mary, but laugh you will." And Steve Murray in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution warns: "The easy-to-offend should find something more polite to watch. Which would be just about anything." All of the critics suggest that they feel a twinge of guilt about recommending the film, with Liam Lacey in the Toronto Globe & Mail noting, "It's better to recommend it to someone else in a side-of-mouth mutter: "Don't tell anyone I said this, but there are scenes in There's Something About Mary that can make you laugh so hard you'll cough up a lung" If someone happens to overhear, you can add quickly in a loud voice: "But of course it's inexcusably crude and offensive." |
