8MM, the new movie starring Nicolas Cage, is receiving a wide range of conflicting comment. "Insipid," is the word Washington Post critic Stephen Holden uses to describe it. "The two m's in 8MM could stand for 'messy melodrama,'" says Mike Clark in USA Today. The two words that Los Angeles Daily News critic Bob Strauss uses are "thoroughly unpleasant." And Steve Murray in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution describes it as "a depressing and unpleasant waste of talent." But Jonathan Foreman in the New York Post calls 8MM, "a mostly gripping movie." And Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times praises the film for raising "moral questions that the audience has to deal with, one way or another. ... It is a real film. Not a slick exploitation exercise." |
