Beloved is opening opposite another Chucky horror film, not screened for critics, and Practical Magic, which is receiving simply horrible reviews. There's little magic on the screen, Rita Kempley in the Washington Post indicates, "unless you count making audiences disappear." Says Peter Howell in the Toronto Star: "There are a lot of witches, but not much craft in Practical Magic, a movie that demonstrates why "horror romance" isn't a major film genre." And Jack Mathews, writing for Newsday and the Los Angeles Times, concludes that despite big stars and a major studio budget, the film feels "like a sitcom with the air let out of it." |
