Forces of Nature, starring Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck, is caught in the forces of opposing critics. Most of them debate whether the on-screen chemistry of the the two stars really creates a viable romantic comedy. Toronto Star critic Peter Howell argues that it does not. "Bullock and Affleck seem like an old married couple, squabbling over the TV channel changer," he writes. However, Philip Wuntch in the Dallas Morning News concludes that "the actors' pleasant chemistry produces shiny, sparkly moments." And while Jay Carr in the Boston Globe praises the film for avoiding "formula predictability," Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times faults a plot twist at the end. Without revealing it, he comments: "This movie hasn't paid enough dues to get away with such a smarmy payoff." |
