The Perfect Murder is receiving something less than faultless reviews for its retelling of Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder. Peter Howell in the Toronto Star, however, commends director Anthony Davis and a cast that includes Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow for making "a good stab at attempting the perfect remake." "Dial M for Muddle," his same-town colleague, Liam Lacey writes in the Toronto Globe & Mail. Stephen Holden in the New York Times likewise praises the "chilly high-gloss ambiance" and the "skillfully plotted" updating but concludes that the "sleekness" of the movie can't "conceal the fact that its characters are stick figures." Likewise, Philip Wuntch in the Dallas Morning News writes that the film is much like Douglas' character, "polished but not quite as clever as it thinks." Glenn Whipp in the Los Angeles Daily News concedes that the film makes for "passable entertainment, but not the kind of movie anyone would look to remake 40 years from now." His words are almost echoed by Steve Murray in the Atlanta Journal & Constitution, who writes that the film is "too pat and airless to be a total kick" but nevertheless "a pleasant way to spend a summer evening. |
