Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson and the other lesser-known actors in Dancing in Lughnasa are receiving high praise for their performances, -- even if the film itself is receiving mostly good-but-not-great reviews. Jami Bernard in the New York Daily News observes: "Streep's sadly comic performance ... is another for her gallery of magnificent portrayals. And Emma Thompson ... is astonishing." Writes Janet Maslin in the New York Times: "[Streep] presents a small, effortless epiphany simply standing still, immersed in the spirit of a lost time and place."
