"Boxing Drama Lacks Punch" is the headline above Lou Lumenick's review of Price of Glory appearing in today's New York Post. It could have been pasted onto most other reviews. Lumenick writes, "Clichés fly faster than fists in Price of Glory, an old-fashioned boxing movie that can't really go the distance." Rita Kempley in the Washington Post writes similarly that star Jimmy Smits "can't wrench free of this tangle of clichés. The only thing that distinguishes it from similar sagas is its Hispanic accent." Jay Carr in the Boston Globe describes Price of Glory as a "boxing movie that could have been a contender, but stumbles over its own clumsiness until it goes down for the count -- and stays down despite a strenuous effort to conclude with a redemptive knockout." On the other hand, Tom Sime comments in the Dallas Morning News, "Among boxing movies, Raging Bull remains the all-time champ at breaking the mold. But Price of Glory fills it well. With its clichés limited to the occasional rabbit punch, it credibly builds suspense and earns its solid emotional impact." |
