High Art is earning some high praise, particularly for star Ally Sheedy's performance. "It's Sheedy's surprisingly honest portrait that is high art," writes Susan Wloszczyna in USA Today. Jack Mathews, writing for Newsday and the Los Angeles Times, faults the film for being "full of itself and its artistic pretensions," but praises the lead performances, particularly that of Sheedy, who, he says, plays her character "with a strength that gradually falls away as a façade over her vulnerability. Similarly, Janet Maslin in the New York Times concludes that the stars "immerse themselves deeply in the film's self-conscious aura. Ms. Sheedy reinvents herself as a tough, fascinating presence." |
